Book deal signed

Those of you following me on Twitter (@newsbrooke) will know that I’ve been negotiating a new book. I can now announce that the deal is done and my next book is tentatively titled: The Silent State: How Secrecy and Misinformation are Destroying Democracy. It will be published by Heinemann, a division of Random House in Spring 2010.

More details to come but in brief this book will be a treatise on the way information collected in the public’s name at public expense is not available to the public and the consequences this has for society. It will be told through a series of stories – including my own case to get MPs’ expenses released -but there will be many more examples from a variety of people. If you have an interesting example of your battle for officials information please do contact me.

I am an amateur at this, Heather.

However, I have a marvellous response to a request for the expenses details of six named MPs citing the fact that the details of all MPs were to be published this summer and denying the details to me…. and we all know that this information was published in black and white- or should that be black and black!

I have an interesting response from the Metropolitan Police following a FOI request for details of the number of official complaints made by citizens for an investigation into the expenses claims made by MPs. This one quoted the ‘it’s far too expensive’ excuse but added that I would probably not get the information anyway!
You will recognise sections quoting the Freedom of Information Act which I ‘lifted’ from your last book!
If they are of any use let me know and I will forward them to you.

It would be interesting to know exactly how many taxpaying citizens have made similar requests for official action against MPs’ fraudulent Claims.

I have copies of letters making an official complaint againt three named MPs including Conway.

If we do manage to put any MP behind bars will they have been ‘Conwayed’!!
    Regards,
    John L Bell

    Dear Heather,
Will the new book have the text for The Fraud Act 2006 as an appendix…… just for the sake of reference?
    regards,

I think people are now waiting for you and Cory Doctorow to team up and await the fallout that could come form that.
