MPs’ expenses – We have until Thursday to stop this rot

Just when you think MPs couldn’t sink any lower in the public’s esteem, they do something so outrageous that it boggles the mind.

Last Thursday, Ministers sneakily put forward a proposal that would exempt MPs’ expenses from the Freedom of Information Act. Apart from the fact this is taxpayer money, MPs have a duty to set the highest example of open and transparent government. Instead, they want a separate exemption from the tax laws that all the rest of us must follow. Not only that, MPs tried to bury this shabby piece of news by publishing it on the same day as the controversial announcement of a third runway at Heathrow.

I will write more about this issue in the coming days, but right now we must all take action to ensure this law isn’t passed. This is one instance where YOU, the public, can make a difference. But you only have until Thursday January 22nd to do so.

You can help in the following three ways:

1. Please write to your MP about this www.WriteToThem.com – ask them to lobby against this concealment, and tell them that TheyWorkForYou will be permanently and prominently noting those MPs who took the opportunity to fight against this regressive move. The millions of constituents who will check this site before the next election will doutbtless be interested.

2. Join this facebook group and invite all your least political friends (plus your most political too). Send them personal mails, phone or text them. Encourage them to write to their politicians too.

3. Write to your local paper to tell them you’re angry, and ask them to ask their readers to do the above. mySociety’s never-finished site http://news.mysociety.org might be able to help you here.

    Dear Heather,
    Will they ever learn?
Definition of the current House of Commons- ‘The biggest single concentration of fiddlers,
thieves and con artists this side of prison bars’ who are happy to accept the tag line
    ‘Citizens Burn While MPs Fiddle!’

    Keep up the good work.
We will bring the existing law to bear, no matter how they try to wriggle, to bring them
    to book.

Scum is as scum does. Joined the facebook group but wont be writing to MP: 2 reasons, no faith in any of them and my MP is Gordon Brown, and I’ve found out it’s pointless writing to him.

    Hi Heather,

Well what did we expect, the problem is if we have any honest politicians they will be made to go in with the dishonest ones on this vote. Most politicians would not know how to be democratic as it is drilled out of them the moment they join the House of Commons. Harriet Harman & Co. need deselecting by the people they are supposed to represent at the very least! Even when you go to vote if you are lucky you have a choice of three selected by the higher ups of the respective parties. We must fight on but surely one of the newspapers should organize a nationwide campaign, something that everyone can get behind. If we loose this right the Labour Party has turned Britain into a dictatorship with politicians not having to answer to any one!

Wake up Britain before it is too late!

Heather I feel devastated that they should try to pull a stunt like this, how must you feel?

Dear Heather. Never has this Country known such a load of the Mafia. They are a complete and utter shambles as with all those in Policing and local Authorities. I have been trying to obtain information from both for over four years now and have been classed as vexatious and therefore they have the right to refuse any requests which I make and no response is received to any letters or other correspondence. The local paper is no better, if one is against the thoughts and requirements of those in office nothing gets published. After having over 50 years of police family conections my thoughts have been well and truely changed in any areas of authority. Your writing is most welcome together with that of Simon Heffer.
